When will you marry? Acrylic on canvas Society constantly dictates that women be married by a certain age and also expect them to be able to manage married life with a successful career. Women who are able to achieve good careers without a family life are seen as a failure, whereas men in a similar situation are viewed as successful or ambitious. As part of my self-portrait series to learn more about myself feel comfortable talking about my experiences as an individual from a socially oriented background; an environment where people feel they have a say in how your life should go. This painting is literally inspired by the question "when will you marry?", a question I usually get from family and friends alike. In this piece I attempt to throw light on the pressure women are faced with as maturing adult, and also to call out on the inconsiderate expectations forced on women by society. @aaminakassim |
